It’s crucial that every instructor understands how Canvas uses its built-in grading scheme to assign letter grades and has modified it to match the grade breakpoints listed in their syllabus. Instructors and students implicitly understand that if a syllabus grade policy contains gaps between letter grade categories then scores falling within those gaps should be rounded up or down. Example: the syllabus states C+ = 77-79%, B- = 80-82%, so a score of 79.8% is expected to be a B-. However, that is not how Canvas works! Canvas grading scheme breakpoints define where each letter grade begins. The preceding letter grade goes “up to but not including” the next breakpoint. If the grading scheme has C+ = 77% and B- = 80%, a total grade of 79.8% = C+. To make Canvas match your syllabus, you will likely need to adjust the canvas grading scheme with breakpoints that fall in the syllabus gaps, e.g. 59.5%, 62.5%, 66.5% etc. For assistance, contact Karla Embleton.
