AACTE honors Denise Schmidt-Crawford for developing outstanding practices in teacher education

Denise Schmidt-Crawford, a professor of educational technology in the School of Education, has been recognized by the American Association of College Teacher Educators with an award for developing outstanding practices in teacher education that advance the profession. Schmidt-Crawford and three colleagues at other universities were honored with the Edward C. Pomeroy Award, on Feb. 25 at AACTE‘s annual meeting.

The award cites the team for developing the Teacher Educator Technology Competencies. The TETCs provide the nation’s colleges and universities with a common set of technology competencies that are essential to understand and demonstrate by all educators who prepare teacher candidates, so future teachers learn to use technology to improve learning. The TETCs provide a framework for integrating technology across an entire teacher preparation program, so teacher candidates can observe educational technology in context and apply it throughout their practicum experiences.

The competencies were developed in response to the National Education Technology Plan released in 2017 by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology, which stated that educator preparation programs hold the responsibility to prepare teacher candidates to successfully teach with technology.
