Kari Jurgenson, a doctoral candidate specializing in mathematics education, has received a $15,000 award from the Philanthropic Educational Organization to support her doctoral education. The P.E.O. Scholar Award cites Jurgenson for scholarly excellence, academic achievement, meritorious career goals, and ability to make a significant contribution to her chosen field. Jurgenson’s dissertation work focuses on how elementary students engage in mathematical discourse and argumentation during an integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — or STEM — unit, and how teachers create environments that support such engagement.
