Iowa State University Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship just hosted their College-by-College Pitch-Off. Students from every college were invited to participate and share their creative ideas to a panel of judges for 90 seconds! Several students advanced to the final round competed for the chance to win up to $5,000.

CHS students, Irma Guzman, Kaylee Brown, and Mia Nichols all participated in this year’s College-by-College Pitch-Off and were able to pitch their creative business ideas.

Irma Guzman created Guzman Studio, which is “a bilingual digital marketing agency looking to help bridge the gap between language barriers and inspire other young Latinas,” Guzman said.

Guzman strives to be the business people seek when marketing towards English and Spanish-speaking audiences. Through her continued work she hopes to receive busy bookings and implement diversity and inclusions efforts to creative bilingual marketing. After graduation Guzman would like to take her skills to New York City and engage in fashion marketing.

Kaylee Brown invented Bug Swim, a “gender and age-inclusive brand that sources from in-house fabric recycling and is actually within budget range,” Brown said.

Brown emphasizes environmental sustainability by recycling old swim pieces and creating new ones from it. She also promotes her brand as a way for consumers to feel confident in a budget friendly swimsuit. Brown hopes Bug Swim can collaborate with an ocean cleaning initiative to create reef friendly suits and eventually sees herself in New York City pursuing her passion for music and art.

Mia Nichols created the idea for an authentic French crepe food truck. “I would like to start my food in the fall of this year to assist in my college education. My plan is to sell near or on-campus, preferably Welch Ave. I want to work with Iowa State to accept dining dollars and as well as attend on-campus events,” Nichols said.

She has been significantly exposed to French customs and would love to cater events such as weddings, farmers markets, and music festivals. Nichols along with her food truck also has an art business called MIA – Mia in Action. She strives to engage in her both of her businesses until graduation then travel all over the world.

Congratulations to the College of Human Sciences’ students who participated in the College-by-College Pitch-Off and to all of the Cyclones with innovative ideas in entrepreneurship.
